I'm curious if there is some way to "touch" each file in the Masters directory so that Google Photos Backup will suddenly see them. Open and log in to your Google Drive, Gmail or Google Photos account on your desktop.
All photos that are pre-existing in the Photos app library seem to be ignored. However, I have found that no matter the solution (whether this or the former), only newly-added photos are detected and uploaded to Google Photos. Save and close the file watchedfolders.txt.~/Pictures/Photos\ Library.photoslibrary/Masters.Add the path to your Masters directory to a new line in that text file.You should see a directory named for the email address associated to your Google account.Open Library -> Application Support -> Google -> Google Photos Backup -> db.Go to your user Home directory (Shift-Command-H).Quit the Google Photos Backup application (so your changes aren't overwritten by auto-save).

I just figured this out, so I'll update if I find any downsides. Go to the Google Photos page on your browser. Features: List current Albums in Google Photos Upload a. You may want to unclick the other watched folders, since Apple Photo should already be importing all images. Now click Choose, and you've succeeded in getting the Google Photos Backup to look inside the Apple Photo package. Drag the Masters folder into the File Dialog: Now, run Google Photos Backup and click Add to select the folder. All of your pictures are inside of Masters, organized by date added (however note that any edits you made in Apple Photos are not included these are the original images). The trick is to understand that Photos Library.photoslibrary is a Package File that Google Photos Backup doesn't know how to see inside. Also remember that if you're using the Google Drive desktop app, photos will be copied to a "Google Photos" folder and automatically downloaded (in essence duplicating what's already on your computer) - head into the Google Drive desktop app to turn off syncing of that folder.Īfter some tweaking and setup - and the inevitably long first upload of your albums - the desktop uploader will work seamlessly in the background, and you'll never be stuck without a backup of every photo you capture.I wasn't sure if this was possible, but I'm please to report that it is, and I'm going to use it myself. Of course just like photos uploaded from your phone they'll be kept private, and you can delete and manage them from the Google Photos website or apps on any device. With the backup app running, the next time you add a photo to any watched folder or connect a camera, the app will instantly start uploading those photos to the service. You can also pause backups and then resume them at any time if you have a bandwidth constraint and don't need the photos uploaded immediately.
You can also click "Preferences" to change what folders you're backing up at any time, as well as choose between upload qualities. You can check your system tray (Windows) or menu bar (OS X) for the Google Photos Backup icon to see the status of your current uploads (which may take some time depending on your internet upload speeds).
